A family camping trip is easier when everyone knows the basics before leaving home: where you are staying, when you can arrive, which activities are available and what you need to bring. Holiday Acres in Garden Prairie offers a pool, outdoor games and a Kishwaukee River setting, with both overnight and seasonal camping options.
Use this guide to plan the day without filling every hour. Check our amenities page for the campground’s facilities and contact the office for the hours and activities that apply to your dates.
Plan pool time around the posted hours
The swimming pool gives families an on-site activity between meals and time at the campsite. Pack swimwear, towels, a dry change of clothes and what your family normally needs for an afternoon outside. Check the pool’s posted rules and opening hours when you arrive.
Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult, and no lifeguard is on duty. Decide which adult will accompany the children rather than treating the pool as an unsupervised activity. The campground’s pool is the swimming option; swimming in the river is not allowed.
Leave room for games and scheduled activities
Volleyball, basketball and Ga-Ga ball are among the campground’s recreation options. Past scheduled activities have included crafts, hayrides, games and holiday celebrations. Visit the events page and ask the office which activities are confirmed for your visit, including any sign-up requirements or fees.
Build your plans around the confirmed schedule after you arrive. A simple day might include a game in the morning, lunch at your site, pool time during posted hours and a quiet evening together. Leave room for downtime and adjust the plan to your group’s interests.
Enjoy the river within the campground rules
You can enjoy the Kishwaukee River setting without getting into the water. Bank fishing is allowed; bring what you need because bait is not sold at the office. Dispose of fishing line and hooks properly. Ask the office about current conditions and access before planning a fishing or paddling outing.
Kayaks, paddle boats, row boats and electric-powered boats are permitted; gas motors and river swimming are not. Do not assume that a shallow-looking area is a swimming area or that a past photo represents today’s conditions. Parents and guardians remain responsible for their children throughout the stay.
Make meals and supplies part of the plan
Miles Bar n Grill is on site if you want a break from cooking. Confirm current hours before planning a meal there. The campground also has a convenience store and laundry facilities; ask about hours and available supplies when you check in.
Bring the items you know your family relies on. Keeping reservation details, medications, chargers, extra clothes and meal essentials together can make the first evening simpler. Firewood may be purchased at the store. Do not cut trees or branches or remove bark.
A practical first-visit packing list
- Reservation details, office phone number and campground directions.
- Camping equipment and the supplies required for your selected site.
- Swimwear, towels, dry clothing and layers for changing weather.
- Meals, drinking water and personal essentials for the trip.
- A flashlight, appropriate footwear and chargers.
- A leash and cleanup supplies if you are bringing a pet.
- Games or books for quiet time at the campsite.
For rentals or unfamiliar camping setups, ask the office what is included before deciding what to pack. Review the guest guidelines so everyone in your group understands the pool, pet, visitor and vehicle rules.
Give arrival and departure enough time
Campsite check-in starts at 2:00 p.m.; cabins start at 3:00 p.m. Check-out is 11:00 a.m. for both. Friday arrivals require at least two nights, and holiday weekends require three. Quiet hours run from 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., and the campground speed limit is 5 mph.
Questions before your visit
